Riots in France Show us the problems of Socialism

PARIS, FRANCE - NOVEMBER 24: A fire rages as protesters wearing yellow vests protest against rising fuel prices on the Champs-Elysees avenue on November 24, 2018 in Paris France. The police have used tear gas and water cannon to in an attempt to disperse the protest, which was organised by 'Yellow Vests' (Vestes Jaunes), a protest movement without political affiliation that protests against taxes and rising fuel prices. Millions of Americans recently received a holiday gift this December, in the form of lower gas prices when we all fill up our cars and trucks. In some parts of Westchester, I saw prices as low as $2.50 per gallon.

In Paris, France, gas prices are $7 per gallon and French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new gas tax earlier this year that will increase the price of fuel by about 30 cents per gallon and will continue to rise over the next few years.  This resulted in rioting in the streets of Paris, because of the gas tax, but also because of Macron’s efforts to try and cut some of the generous social welfare programs in France.

The people of France will have none of Macron’s efforts to increase the gas tax or cut social programs, and what is happening in France should be a lesson to all us about the economic freedoms we all enjoy in the USA.

I ran for Congress in NYC in 2016. In 2018, I decided not to run for the same seat, which was won by Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who has quickly become the darling of the Democratic Party, and a rock star, who travels the country to support democratic candidates and causes.

But if you truly examine what Congresswoman-elect Ocasio-Cortez, and most of the democratic party want to do, it should make you realize that what is happening in France can happen here.

Medicare for all, housing as a right for every American, and even a basic income for everyone even if you are not working, are just some of the ideas advocated by Ocasio-Cortez. Here are my thoughts on each one of these ideas, which sound good, but won’t work and will bankrupt our country, which is already $22 Trillion in debt.

Medicare for all is similar to the health care system in Canada and Great Britain. Each of us will have ‘free health care’ but will have to pay for private health care or wait months for simple procedures and operations. Many Doctors that practice in our country today no longer accept new Medicare patients because the fee they receive from the government is too little.

Housing for all is another expensive proposal. We need to rehabilitate and construct more affordable housing for our seniors and yes for the very poor. But if we can’t afford to do that then how can we pay for a housing voucher for every American?

Basic income is nothing more than a handout, and if we start by giving everyone $500 or $1000 per month, eventually, everyone will demand more. My question to Congresswoman-elect Ocasio-Cortez is, who will pay for all of this?

I know the answer to the question, it will be small businessmen and women like me. Just tax us a few more points more and the money will flow in, that’s the theory of Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, who she volunteered for when he ran for President.

Well, I can tell Bernie and Alexandra that my profit margins are so small that I’m close to closing down my business. The Federal, State and NYC taxes, are already up to my neck. If you continue to tax me and the American middle class, then guess what will happen here?

Exactly what is happening in France. The working class people of France are fed up. Most receive free health care, and many other social benefits. Millions have a government job that President Macron is trying to cut. And there taxes are through the roof, starting with gas at $7 per gallon and going up.

Think twice before you ask for socialism in America. Just take a look at Paris…and hold onto your wallet.
